When you buy proxies you'll be offered two protocols: SOCKS5 and HTTP. They're not competitors so much as tools for different jobs. Here's how they differ and which to choose.
HTTP proxies
An HTTP proxy understands web traffic. It reads the HTTP headers of your request, which lets it cache responses, filter content and modify headers. HTTPS traffic is tunnelled through the CONNECT method so it stays encrypted. HTTP proxies are perfect when you're working purely with websites and want web-aware handling.
SOCKS5 proxies
A SOCKS5 proxy operates at a lower level. It simply forwards packets without inspecting them, so it can carry any kind of traffic — web, email, P2P, game servers, anything. Because it does no protocol parsing, it adds virtually no overhead and works with tools that aren't strictly HTTP based. SOCKS5 also supports UDP and authentication.
